MITIS Parents Association Oath-taking Ceremony

The newly-elected officers of the MIT International School (MITIS) Parents Association took their oath of office before Muntinlupa City Mayor Aldrin San Pedro on September 26, 2011 at the Muntinlupa City Hall.  The new officers were headed by the association’s president, businesswoman Mariselle Revita who was for many years  was the Executive Secretary of the Muntinlupa Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She succeeded John Prior, a corporate executive, whose daughter, Maria, graduated from Grade 12 in May 2011.

The parents were accompanied by MITIS officials Marciano Rebollos, Charlene Salvador, and Lei Pangilinan. Their presence affirmed the school’s belief that the highest standards of learning can be achieved through close collaboration with the students’ families.  In his brief remarks, Mayor San Pedro expressed hopes that the parents will be helpful to the school.

The association’s first president was banker Raymond Reboredo whose son, Franco, is a mainstay of the school’s varsity basketball team.  The first set of officers served for two school years highlighted by the parents’ participation in the initial accreditation visit of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in March, 2009. 

The present officers were earlier exhorted by the school Principal, Dr. Bienvenido V. Santos, to undertake programs in support of the school’s expected schoolwide learning results (ESLRs).  Ms. Revita and two other officers are members of the Leadership Team which is responsible for the preparation of the Self-Study Report in preparation for the WASC accreditation visit in March, 2012.

High Hopes for PSHS Graduates at MITIS

Selected graduates of the Philippine Science High School may soon find their way to MITIS for enrolment in Grades 11 and 12.  The bright prospects were considered in a forum entitled “ Exploring the Benefits of the K+12 Curriculum for Gifted Filipino Students” held at the school on November 4, 2010. In attendance were around 100 students together with their teachers and top school administrators.
In his presentation, Mr. Hyock Chu Kwon challenged the PSHS students to consider the excellent opportunities for them to study on scholarships in top foreign universities. He acknowledged that PSHS graduates may have easy access to admission in local universities but encouraged them to have bigger dreams for themselves.  Mr. Kwon offered full tuition scholarships to selected students to complete Grades 11 and 12 at MITIS. (Full text of Mr. Kwon’s  message is in Director’s Corner)
The excellent opportunities for quality education at Kyoto University was discussed by Dr. Kakuya Matsushima in his talk, “Infrastructure Planning and the Role of Engineers”.    He also presented the Global 30 Project of Kyoto University.  Dr. Matsushima is an Associate Professor  in the Graduate School of Urban Management in the university.
The process of earning scholarship grants was discussed by Ms. Atsuko Sakamaki, the Country Officer of Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE).  Both Dr. Matsushima and Ms. Sakamaki pointed out that the basic requirement  for admission in Japanese universities is completion of Grades 11 and 12

During the open forum facilitated by Mr. Andre Kwon, PSHS students asked a number of questions about the quality of school life at MITIS.  They inquired about the nationalities of in the MITIS population and  if MITIS students have proms and social events. They wanted to find out what responsibilities they have to assume for enjoying MITIS scholarships.  Mr. Andre Kwon replied that they only need to study very well.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Filma G. Brawner, the Executive Director of PSHS System expressed elation for the prospects of a bright future for PSHS students. She cited the significance of the forum in expanding the students’ perspectives on new challenges and opportunities.

University Admission Seminar Commended

      The well-attended seminar on university admission held last May 19 at the MIT International School drew commendations from parents and guardians for its comprehensiveness and depth.
      The seminar was handled by School Founder-Director Hyock Chu Kwon who has repeatedly given his commitment to work incessantly for the admission of MITIS graduates into top foreign universities particularly those in the US, UK., Australia, Japan, and Singapore.
      Mr. Kwon expressed well-founded optimism as he pointed out the school’s thrusts in world-class education.  He cited the school’s continuing efforts at WASC accreditation and the authorization from College Board, USA in offering Advanced Placement (AP) courses.   
      Mr. Kwon also expressed confidence that MITIS graduates can be granted scholarships or financial aid in some universities with which MITIS is currently engaged in concluding memoranda of agreement on student recruitment and admission.
      Among the prominently featured universities in the seminar were: Kennesaw State University (USA), Armstrong Atlantic State University (USA), National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Deakin University (Australia), Monash University (World Ranking Top 45, Australia), and Nagoya University (Asia Ranking Top 10, Japan).
      Presently, MITIS has an agreement with TMC Academy in Singapore and Nagoya University in Japan on the recruitment and admission of students from the MITIS to the two academic partners which are excellent universities in Asia.

MITIS Students Shine in Francophonie Day

March 13, 2010

The French Embassy together with the Alliance Francaise de Manille (AFM) organized the celebration of Le jour de Francophonie (Francophonie Day) on March 13, 2010 at the University of dad de Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila. The 17 groups which participated came from top universities and international schools, namely the University of Santo Tomas (UST), University of the Philippines (UP), De La Salle- St Benilde, the International School Manila (ISM), and MIT International School (MITIS).        The MITIS students were a big hit and very much appreciated they were given a special award by the judges, each student receiving a nice red bag with a small present inside.  They sang "Je suis un artiste (I am an artist)", a French song for children by Matt Maxwell, arranged by MITIS Music teacher Dave Saraza, and choreographed by Ms. Anke Moersheim, a former ballet dancer.  Apart from performing well, they also participated (against the university students) in the quizzes where they received most of the prizes.       The talented students were: Franco Reboredo (Gr 6), Andre Barbarona (Gr 6),  Roderick Aguto,  Baek Young Gi (Alex),   Park Joo Hyun (Robin), Sean Sebastian Yco, Angel Dannah Cardoza, Kwon Ji Soo (Amy), Lee Soo Min (Janette), Park Su Jin (Sandy) and Joshiah Kryz Suansing. They were accompanied and coached by their French teacher, Ms. Leah Buhain. On hand to give encouragement to the students were parents Mrs. Susan Barbarona and Mr. and Mrs. Suansing.        The students were later requested by MITIS President and Principal, Dr. Bienvenido V. Santos, to perform their piece during the students’ general assembly on March 15, 2010.  In their behalf, Ms. Leah Buhain offered the students’ Prancophonie success to the School Director, Mr. Hyock Chu Kwon.

Two activities were conducted on March 13, 2009, the Spelling Bee with contestants from Grades 4 to 6 and the Festival of Shakespearean Plays participated in by Grades 7-10 students.
The winners of the Spelling Bee were Shaun Sebastion Yco, Grade 5, (Champion), Andre Barbarona, Grade 5, (1st runner up), and Amy Kwon, Grade 4, (2nd runner up).
The two activities sponsored by the English Department headed by Ms. Nicole Concepcion and were part of the celebration of Founder’s Week.

These have been the recurrent themes of messages given by Mr. Hyock Chu Kwon and Dr. Bienvenido V. Santos during the weekly assembly of students. The themes are elaborations of STRIPES, the acronym for the school’ core values of solidarity, truth, respect, integrity, perseverance, excellence, and service.

SCB goes Team Building

The officers of the Student Coordinating Board (SCB) held a team building activity last November 28-30 at the Kabayan Beach Resort in Laiya, Batangas.  Dubbed “Dare to start with zero”, the activity was designed to foster camaraderie and teamwork among the student leaders.  It also provided the opportunities to discuss the SCB’s pressing concerns and their resolutions.
      The participants were Paloma Lindfield, AJ Silva, Tommy Dong, Tim Aurin, John Cramen, Aimee Benjamin, Shines Cardoza, JF Aguinaldo, and SCB President Au Tae Hong.  They were accompanied by teachers Michaela Flores and Paolo Naïve.
      When interviewed,  Tommy Dong said he loved the activity as he learned more about himself  and how he could build on his personal strengths and improve on some areas.  Shines Cardoza for her part said she got to know the other participants much more and learned to trust them more as her friends.

MITIS Earns ISA Membership

April 2, 2009

MIT International School (MITIS) has gained membership in the International School Association (ISA) based in Geneva, Switzerland. In a letter dated April 2, 2009, ISA Chairman Jorge Segovia wrote, “ I offer you my congratulations and welcome you most warmly to the most senior of all the international associations of schools.” The International Schools Association works to promote international and intercultural understanding. In so doing, the Association espouses a number of values - peace, freedom, equality, tolerance and the celebration of both diversity and similarity - which express for the Association the essential meaning and purpose of multiculturalism and international mindedness. The ISA has members in 36 countries. The ISA Chairman added, “numbers are something, but the interaction, sharing, and mutual understanding that form the basis of internationalism are of much greater importance”. He expressed the hope that with ISA membership MITIS will find many learning opportunities for its students and teachers. MITIS is set to send students to the 7th Youth Leadership Seminar on June 29 –July 4, 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. These seminars bring together young people from around the world to explore issues of global significance. The school will also send teachers to ISA annual seminars on key themes in international education and focusing on fundamental issues linking education and society. The seminars are held in Geneva in association with the International School of Geneva and the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). According to MITIS President, Dr. Bienvenido V. Santos, the school is also set to use ISA’s new publication “Internationalism in Schools – a Self-Study Guide” and to be one of the very first schools to earn ISA’s Certificate of Internationalism. This publication, developed in association with the University of Bath, offers a means of reflecting upon the nature of internationalism within schools. Dr. Santos, expressed optimism that with ISA membership and its Certificate of Internationalism, MITIS can express more forcefully and eloquently its convictions and best practices on internationalism and international education.

WASC Report Elates MITIS Communtiy

April 1, 2009           The WASC report given on April 1, 2009 at the end of a three-day accreditation visit highly elated the MITIS community. Dr. Harold Bush, the chair of the WASC visiting team, read the report in an assembly of school staff, parents, and student representatives. Among the strengths of MITIS as cited in the report were the school’s small class size, the high quality of instruction, the attention given to individual students, the scholarship program for deserving students, the high satisfaction ratings given by parents and students about the school and its educational services, and the vision, passion, and unwavering commitment of the school’s top management for world-class education. Dr. Bush was formerly a superintendent of schools in California, USA. The other member of the visiting team was Mary Charity Stein from the American School in Taichung, Taiwan. The accreditation process developed by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) highlights the expectation that schools must be worthy of the trust placed in them to provide high quality learning opportunities. Schools must also clearly demonstrate that they are about the critical business of continual self-improvement ultimately; the accreditation process is all about fostering excellence in education. The visiting committee’s report provides compelling evidence that MITIS is substantially accomplishing its stated purposes and functions and that the school is meeting an acceptable level of quality in accordance with the WASC criteria adopted by the Accrediting Commission. The report buttressed wide observations that the school’s growth in enrolment and achievements in less than two years of operation are indeed “amazing”. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is an accrediting association in the United States, which provides assistance to schools located in East Asia. MITIS Officials Attend WASC Session

      MITIS officials Hyock Chu Kwon, Dr. Bienvenido V. Santos, Franchita Alcausin, and Charlene Salvador attended a one-day WASC session on October 30, 2009 at the EDSA Plaza Shangrila.
      The session was conducted by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in cooperation with the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS).
      The interactive session facilitated by Dr. Marilyn George, WASC Associate Executive Director, examined the essentials of the Focus on Learning self-study and the many ways it can be adapted to a school’s situation.
      The session started with an overview of the accreditation process and the benefits it offers a school as it progresses from one measure of success to another. In response to a call for reactions, Dr. Santos pointed out  that the accreditation process leads a school “to become a learning organization that
perpetually stretches its capacity to create”. 
      MITIS is an approved candidate for accreditation by WASC.

      The session was highlighted by testimonies on the effective ways of realizing a school’s expected school-wide learning results (ESLRs).  A panel of EARCOS educators shared how they adapted the Focus on Learning process  for their respective schools, including its integration with strategic planning.  Dr. George stressed that in essence WASC stands for We Are Student Centered. 
      At the end of the session, the MITIS officials met with Dr. George who promised to visit MITIS in March, 2010 when she returns for another WASC conference in Manila.
