Graduates of the Philippine Science High School System (or Pisay as it is popularly referred to) may enroll in Grades 11 and 12 at MITIS to enable them to gain admission and scholarships in top foreign universities which generally require completion of six years of secondary education.
As conceived, taking the 2-year pre-university course at MITIS on scholarship will be helpful for Pisay graduates who find difficulty in pursuing university education particularly in Singapore, Japan, Australia, US, and UK. MITIS offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Grades 11 and 12 which enable students to earn college credits while in high school.
The concept is that outstanding and deserving Pisay graduates may study at MITIS on full scholarship with allowance for full boarding. This will be an extension of the school’s existing scholarship program for 20 deserving Filipino students selected from the public schools of the cities of Muntinlupa, Las Pinas, and Paranaque. The program is now on its fourth year and has been a noteworthy expression of the school’s corporate social responsibility.
This bright prospect for Pisay graduates was the subject of exploratory consultations between the top officials of the two schools last October 12. There were shared views on the desirability of the 12-year basic education curriculum. There was also high optimism that parents of the PSHS will welcome the additional two years at MITIS for their children.
Present during the meeting from Pisay were Dr. Filma G. Brawner, Executive Director, Ms. Corazon Monica B. Sabio, Deputy Executive Director, and Dr. Christina B. Cristobal, Chief, Student Services Division. MITIS was represented by Mr. Hyock Chu Kwon, Mr. Andre Kwon, Dr. Bienvenido V. Santos, and Ms. Charlene Salvador. They were joined by Dr. Kim Kwangmoon, an Associate Professor of Kyoto University, Japan.
The Philippine Science High School System is an attached agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). It was established by R.A. 3661 in 1963 for the purpose of giving an education highly enriched in science and mathematics to exceptionally gifted Filipino children. It has grown into 11 campuses in different locations in the Philippines.
Towards the end of the meeting, the officials of the two schools agreed to conduct inter-school visitations and further consultations. Dr. Kim expressed optimism that the MITIS offer of scholarship to Pisay graduates could lead to agreements on other fields of concern which could be beneficial for both schools.
