SECOND SMPP: PHYSICS OLYMPICS

Congratulations to the MIT Physics team for being the overall champion in the       concluded 2nd SMPP Physics Olympics held at Ateneo de Manila University.

There were 21 schools who participated in the said competition, and I think MITIS was the first international school that has ever taken part in it.  As coach, I knew it was going to be a difficult to make the first cut-off  but my advice to the team was to make the most out of their opportunity, to follow their dream of  becoming champions, but also, to keep in mind that life is not just about Physics Olympics. It’s the team’s first match and first time to be under any competition pressure.   Hence, it was also a perfect opportunity for them to show what they’ve got.  Off the top of my head, we’ve bitten off more than we could chew, so we had thought of giving it up, yet with tenacity and anticipation, we overcame the challenge and grasped the historic opportunity-winning the first prize in the contest. I was pleased that I was asked to be part of it and that I was able to bring home the bacon. Here comes another challenge, but my preliminary observation has revealed that MITIS team has needed to undertake tough physics training to equip them with some necessary qualifications. I estimate that it will take couple of months to pull everything together.  I really want them to make sure that every area is adequately examined.  Indeed, the existence of this kind of competition has made me pursue teaching as my profession.
